The article is devoted to principles, images and motifs of romanticism that was used in the Nicolay Gogol’s and Leonid Andreev’s oeuvre. For example, Gogol develops the concept of romantic irony which is expressed in chronotopes binary opposition (day – night, forest – farm, pond – farm) and characters (lad – demon, girl – witch, father – son, etc.).
