The article is devoted to principles, images and motifs of romanticism that was used in the Nicolay Gogol’s and Leonid Andreev’s oeuvre. For example, Gogol develops the concept of romantic irony which is expressed in chronotopes binary opposition (day – night, forest – farm, pond – farm) and characters (lad – demon, girl – witch, father – son, etc.). The author offers his version of bi-worldness concept, when the one side of life becomes the everyday world, and the other becomes the inner universe of the mad protagonist. This technique was also used by Andreev in his story "Red Laugh".
