Kaisyn Kuliev turned to the topic of deportation when he was in the city of Frunze in 1946. Kuliyev began writing the poem “Testament” (“Osuyat”). Soviet art literature for seventy years, until 1987, was silent about the violent total repressive deportation that many peoples underwent in 1935-1937. Even then, Kuliev wrote the bitter necessary truth, with amazing foresight, putting national issues in a number of urgent ones. In Russian, the poem was published only in 1990 in the newspaper Kabardino Balkarskaya Pravda, translated by S. Lipkin.

Key words: deportation, Balkar literature, epic poem, testament, literary motifs, historical memory, problematics of the work, social context, symbols and generalizations
