The article is written on a topical topic. In recent years, articles, monographs and dissertations devoted to the work of outstanding European writers have been increasingly published. The special attention of writers, as a rule, is focused on those artists of the word who created at the junction of two directions: realism and modernism, neorealism and existentialism, etc. One of them is Graham Greene. His well-known novels, which are permeated by the historical and philosophical concept individually interpreted by the writer, are taken as the subject of research. Therefore, it is natural that all the storylines are reduced in the work to this concept (or model). The quoted fragments are carefully selected, testifying to the historical background against which the main events in the novels unfold. It is noted in the work that when depicting the characters, G. Green appeals to the reader's experience. The reader perceives the fragments of the life of the characters depicted by the author, relying on the experience of previous literature, and the reader's imagination can, as it were, complete the "missing" in the narrative possible philosophical and historical prerequisites for the current life of the characters and the social forms of their communication with the world. This motif runs like a red thread through both novels. It should be noted that the specific socio-historical situation largely forms the character (logic) of human thinking and the style (forms) of behavior. The general laws of the socio-historical development of society have their own specific logic, and a person as a social being is always "drawn" into the sphere of a certain political and historical situation. At the same time, this does not prevent the philosophical reasoning of the actors at all.

Key words: artistic thinking, realism, English literature, G. Green, novel, modernism
