Sicilianisms in the prose of Andrea Camilleri

The given article deals with the connection between modern Italian and Sicilian dialect in the literature. The article is aimed at examining the peculiarities of the usage of dialectisms (sicilianisms) in the novel by Andrea Camilleri В«Il campo del vasaioВ». The research objectives are: to examine diachronically the influence of Sicilian dialect on the formation of Italian literature; to define vitability of Sicilian dialect at the present time; to describe and analyze siciliannisms to define the role and frequency of dialectisms in the prose of Andrea Camilleri. The following conclusions are drawn: Italian national culture and literature are formed under the influence of Bolonian, Tuscan and Sicilan schools. Sicilian dialect is an independent linguistic system, with its own lexical, grammatical, phonetic peculiarities unlike the Italian language. Newadays Sicilian dialect is a stable means of informal communication. In the novel by Andrea Camilleri В«Il campo del vasaioВ» sicilianisms are used on phonetic, morphologic, word-formative, syntactic and graphical levels. Sicilianisms are about 30 % of the novel total vocabulary in the words of the author and in the speech of the main characters to create a real picture of Sicilian life. The methods of the research are: companion analysis method (collection, analysis of dialects by comparing, describing); descriptive method (including generalization of data analyzed); transformation method to reveal similarities and differences in peculiar cases of the use of dialectisms in modern Italian literary language.
