This article analyzes the development of the institution of asylum in international law. Author's position concerning the content of the legal phenomenon. This article contains international legal approaches to the regulation of the institution of asylum, an assessment of the main international instruments on asylum and analysis of existing standards for asylum seekers. The author pays particular attention to the modern legal doctrine of the institution of asylum.
