In order to identify the characteristic features of the heroes of modern German prose, the rks of the prominent German writer Maike Wetzel were analyzed. In the second half of the 20th and early 21st centuries, a short story, closely related to the events of this time, is experiencing particular popularity. New heroes are young people who are looking for the purpose in life, most often unsuccessfully, as insurmountable circumstances arise in their way. The most noticeable features of the "generation 89", accentuated by M. Wetzel, were its apoliticality, emotional coldness, psychological apathy, depression, and loss of public illusions. This is probably why most of the characters in the writer's stories are loners, egoists, people who are closed in their own world and perceive other people as a hindrance to their peace.
Key words: modern German short story, topical issues, youth society, German writer, Maike Wetzel
