The article is devoted to the problems of studying African multilingualism. In the course of the work, the authors systematize the theoretical base on the subject matter, paying the greatest attention to such key concepts as В«mother tongueВ», В«first languageВ» and В«second languageВ». The paper also discusses the main linguocultural and sociopolitical difficulties that accompany African multilingualism, including the possibilities of solving the problems under consideration.
