The article considers fine art ecphrasis and artistic documentary genre incorporations (literary portrait, literary memories, review, etc.) as the principles of artistic world modelling in Yu. Dombrovsky’s novel 'Faculty of Unnecessary Knowledge. The concept of creative work, represented in the text, rests upon the confrontation of totalitarian authority and a free individual; the latter finds its personified embodiment in the images of S. Kalmykov, the artist, and a fake author-narrator. Game poetics and axiology of mythopoeia define the ways of creating the image of the depicted characters; while the reference to the biblical and historical allusions, intertextual parallels bring the subtextual symbolic plane of the novel to the foreground. The authors emphasize a special role of fine art ecphrasis in the creation of the art world, which is based on the contrast union of fantastic and everyday type of space.
