The article presents the results of the comparative studies of grammar features (syntactic position, functions and valency) Рѕf past participle in the Old and Middle English periods. In the Old English texts participle has a dual character, combining nominal and verbal features. In the Middle English period, the functions of past participle undergo significant changes. The analysis showed a narrowing of the functions and valency characteristics of past participle . In the Middle English period, past participle is very rarely used with a noun in both attributive and apposition functions. There is a marked predominance of the use of the participle with the verb (mainly in the predicative function). Past participle is practically deprived of attributive and adverbial functions and valencies, preserving and expanding the verbal functions and consequently, verbal valence (compatibility with the link verb).
