The article examines the transformation of ideas about the phenomenon of irony. Its nature and quality conceptualized in the coordinates of philosophy and rhetoric. The author shows that the possibility of irony and ironic effects of communication become relevant research area in the time of Socrates, and only in the twentieth century. It begins the gradual formation of ethical and philological theories of irony. Thus, consideration of irony as a concept it is advisable to start with a light of its performance in the philosophical scientific paradigm.
