The article presents the overview of a long process of penetration of foreign words into the Persian language in its diachrony and the rise of the puristic movement in the Iranian society in the XX century, which lead to the establishment of Farhangistan - a state body, mandated to construct and develop its own, nonborrowed words and terms, based on the Persian vocabulary instead of loanwords. The article also considers the performance and function of continually reorganised Farhangistan, its methods of word creation and derivation, the influence of its results on the vocabulary of modern Persian language. The research is based on the analysis of archived as well as recently published materials, including modern Persian dictionaries, publications on the subject of the “defence” of the Persian language
