The article is devoted to the detailed analysis of the evolution of such a literary phenomenon as the means of expression of artistic convention in American drama throughout the period from the 1900s till the 1950s. The study is done on the material of the following plays: «Why Marry» by J.L. Williams, «Desire under the Elms» and «Anna Christie» by E. O’Neill, «The Glass Menagerie» by T. Williams, «Death of a Salesman» by A. Miller and «The Zoo Story» by E. Albee. The author of the article classifies the means of expression of artistic convention on the basis of the purpose they are used for or the way they are expressed in a play.
