The article is devoted to depicting Ukrain life in the literary prose by Orest Somov, a writer of the epoch of the XIX century Romanticism. The authors pay a special attention to the influence of poetry of laughing folklore on Somov’s novellas. Interaction of pagan and Christian notions in the writer’s literary works is also considered. The role of folk-festive merry-making is shown together with the traditions and literary images of Somov’s world.
