UNDERSTANDING CHRISTOPHER MARLOWE’S PERSONALITY AND CREATIVE ACTIVITY IN WORKS OF M.M. MOROZOV AND A.A. SMIRNOV

The article considers peculiarities of the leading Soviet researchers of Shakespeare in the 1930-1950-s M.M. Morozov’s and A.A. Smirnov’s approaches to Christopher Marlowe’s creative work, which manifested, in particular, in perception of the historical chronicle «Edward II» as the peak of Marlowe’s drama, in their striving to see conditioning of literary works by emergence of new bourgeois relationships, emphasize their democratic tendency. It names argumentative facts ascertaining of Marlowe’s influence in Shakespeare’s creative work an undoubtful merit of Morozov. It notes that Smirnov as the researcher of Marlowe’s creative activity evolved from early works, connected to a considerable degree with Marx’s methodology, to works, containing capital analysis of the artistic world in Marlowe’s plays, based on the direct work with a literary text.
