The main poetic features of the Gothic novel of England and its origin as a genre are considered. The short story of the pre - romantic era was genetically related to the Gothic novel, appearing in the latter initially in the form of an insert stories. That’s why particular attention is paid to the Gothic novel with insert stories as its genre - forming element. The German Biedermeier, according to the authors of the article, can present an example of such literary reflection. In this regard, an attempt is made to typologically analyze the classic Gothic short story “Lothaire: a Legend” by Harriet Lee and the German Biedermeier short story “Martin der Streber” by Paul Heise. The connection of these genre varieties can be traced through the chronotope, literary figure system, plot and category of the supernatural. The specific world modeling of Gothic surroundings and realism presented in the Biedermeier short stories allows not only to reveal the genetic connection and continuity of these literary trends, but also to trace their specific reflection in the German Biedermeier.
