The main purpose of this article is to find a new hero in the works of Gorky. The subject of the research are the heroes of the novels "Foma Gordeyev" and "Three". The writer in both works shows the way of formation of heroes: moral and social. Speaking against social injustice, the writer tries to resolve it in the moral aspect. However, as the writer shows, social contradictions cannot be resolved on the basis of moral criteria. Gorky's heroes are looking for real, practical ways to fight for a just social structure of society. Portraying the environment, the writer wants to emphasize its inconsistency with human nature. The laws of this environment, its principles and concepts of justice are completely contrary to the moral principles of the human soul. The era of the turn of the XIX-XX centuries is in many respects, including in the development of literature transition, when in life and in literature there are new processes and revised old political and aesthetic values, which leads to fundamental changes in history and literature. This process is especially clearly and vividly expressed in the works of writers, in this case, Gorky, in the writer's choice of heroes for his works, which, of course, is closely and organically connected with life itself and its requirements. This article is an attempt to investigate the problem of a new hero in Gorky's work, to show the writer's search in this direction. Its results can be used in University courses of teaching the history of Russian literature, in the research of the writer.
