The article is written in a cognitive-discourse paradigm of linguistics. It deals with the comparative analysis of the feature concept church represented in the short stories by A. Chekhov and James Joyce. A motif is taken as the core unit of the analyses. In “Dubliners” by James Joyce the main motifs representing the structure of the feature concept “church” are the motifs of faith , sin , church ministry , paralysis and death. In the short stories by A. Chekhov the concept “church” is verbalized by the motifs of faith , sin , church ministry , visit to the church and spiritual unity . The study results presented in the article contribute to further research in the cognitive linguistics which may be devoted to the study of the personal worldview, the structure of the concept, the distinctive characteristics of Russian and English conceptspheres.
