The article is devoted to peculiarities of the transformation of the novel by Lev Tolstoy В«War and peaceВ» into the libretto by S. Prokofiev. The article discusses the changes taking place in the system of characters and plot during the В«transitionВ» of a literary text into an Opera libretto. Some changes of the main characters - Prince Andrei Bolkonsky and Natasha Rostova are investigated in the article. Prokofiev and his wife, colleague and assistant on making libretto Mira Mendelson-Prokofieva have reduced 4 volumes of novel to one Epigraph and 13 scenes, where Prince Andrei has 4 scenes and Natasha has 6. The author uses such a methods like comparative, typological, hermeneutic, and literary analysis of the selected texts (both the literary original and the Opera libretto). In the course of the work the author establishes a number of intermedial strategies by which the transposition of the literary text is carried out, and also answers the question: is it possible to preserve the depth and detail of the images of fiction in the intermedial transition of the plot of a major epic work in the Opera libretto.
