LINGUISTIC AMBIGUITY IN HUMOROUS APHORISMS OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE

The paper sheds light on the differences between verbal and referential humor and outlines the specific characteristics of the language game at phonological, lexical and syntactic levels on the material of the English language. The authors infer that complex cognitive foundations of creating humour allow to produce and to perceive a humorous game, in which sometimes it is impossible to state unequivocally what plays the leading role in creating a comic effect: illogical and paradoxical judgments or language means of its display.
