STRUCTURING CONCEPTUAL DOMAINS BY THE LEXEM “CLOSE”

The article deals with the lexeme “close (to)” in its adjectival and adverbial meanings, structuring basic conceptual domains in the English language. The authors identify the main semantic representations of the considered lexical unit, representing a certain level of proximity of the object, described in terms of space, time, color, relationship, or condition. They reveal individual constructs, expanding within each domain and describe certain scales of proximity gradation in almost all the domains represented by the lexical unit “close (to)”.
