In the syntax of any language, the placement of punctuation marks in the text is important because they (punctuation marks) help to more accurately understand the author’s intention. In addition, any expert with higher education should be able to express correctly their thoughts in a written text. The article focuses on punctuation in the English, Russian and Kalmyk languages, which are languages with different systems. Punctuation systems of any language, as well as the language itself, are in constant development. In the XX th - beginning of the XXI st centuries new punctuation trends appear, some of them become dominant when placing punctuation marks with different syntactic structures, while the others gradually disappear from use. The process of the emergence of new punctuation trends is also found in the three languages and their styles under consideration. Studies show that new meanings have appeared in the semantic function of punctuation marks. Our interest is the usage of punctuation marks with those new meanings in scientific, publicistic styles and artistic texts in English, Russian and Kalmyk languages. This article examines the use of punctuation in sentences with references. The author considers the arrangement of punctuation marks with the specified syntactic structure, tries to identify typologically relevant (general) and their specific characteristics. The actual material was selected from English, Russian and Kalmyk scientific, publicistic and artistic texts of the XX-XXI centuries.
