The article deals with the results of the research devoted to the mechanisms of speech perception and production in the French and English diplomatic discourses. The study examines diplomatic discourse from the point of view of its influence on native speakers’ opinions - the area of research which has not been given particular attention yet, but which is mainstream due to the realities of modern life. The subject of the research is the strategies and tactics used in the speeches by the President of France F. Hollande, and the British diplomats D. Cameron and M. Rycroft. The aim of the research is to reveal the relation between the strategies used by diplomats and their perception by ordinary native speakers. The authors conducted an Internet poll and found the interrelation of perception of diplomatic discourse by non-specialists in the sphere of and the strategies used by the speakers. The article also shows the differences in the assessments given by the respondents concerning the offered reference materials which were based on their individual peculiarities and personal views and ideas. The article and the results of the conducted research will be useful for those who are interested in the problems of diplomatic discourse in English and French.
