In this article we scrutinize the relationship between the portrait of the character and the form of his behavior. Material of the study was descriptions of the appearance of Lev Myshkin, Nicholay Stavrogin, Pavel Smerdyakov. We tried to find answers to the following questions: why is the portrait of the "positively beautiful" Prince Myshkin is so colorless, Stavrogin, he is Prince Ivan, has two portraits, and even the footman Smerdyakov, and Ivan Karamazov has no one. During the research we identified: the first portrait of Nikolai Vsevolodovich is the complete opposite of the appearance of Lev Myshkin , which is addition to the contrast of characters, the homeliness of Myshkin goes back to the traditional descriptions of the appearance of Holy men, and the pretentiousness of the portrait Stavrogin - a means of masking spiritual emptiness of a sinner; in tandem Karamazov - Smerdyakov the author actively uses the symbol of eyes as a means of influence and non-verbal communication; Karamazov is deprived of a portrait, as it seeks to address metaphysical issues, he omits reality.

Key words: портрет, глаз, Ф.М.
