The article defines the functions of artistic details and symbols in story by F.N. Gorenstein “Spark”. In the field of attention of the writer is the creative intelligentsia of the times of L.I. Brezhnev. Thoughts of heroes are pragmatic, aspirations are directed to more than specific goals: to advance on the career ladder, to take part in a profitable project, ahead of colleagues. They skillfully maneuver, overcoming bureaucratic obstacles, perfectly feel the political situation, are prudent in their loyalty. The materiality of their aspirations is demonstrated with the help of subject realities. “Domesticated” space, the tangible petty-bourgeois world, is contrasted with the proletarian "bad infinity" - and the faceless things of the House of Veterans of the Revolution. The focus is on three tobacco packs: “Spark” (“Iskra”), “Firework” (“Salyut”), “Belomorkanal”. The name of the first shocked an elderly Leninist, a former representative of the revolutionary newspaper “Iskra” in London; a veteran writes a complaint, a scandal erupts in the government, after which the Central Committee imposes a resolution banning the production of "blasphemous" products. Then follows the story of the cigars “Salute”, which were developed by special order for the arrival of Churchill in the USSR and could not withstand a high-level audit. A picture on a pack of cigarettes “Belomor” becomes in the story F.N. Gorenstein is a reflection of suffering and at the same time a sign of the lost conscience of the new generation. Particularity is elevated to the rank of a symbol of the state system.
