The article considers the concept of extremism, as a threat to the national security of the Russian Federation. Law enforcement authorities, judges don’t have a unified approach of extremism and extremist crimes as phenomena essence. Contradictions in the content of the concept “extremism” entail legal indetermination in determining the criteria of extremist crimes and in delineation with adjacent crimes. Today there is a need to develop a unified concept of "extremism" and the introduction new crimes into the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation for protecting the constitutional system of the Russian Federation and the international community.
