This paper is addressed A.P. Chekhov’s epistolary phraseological occasionalisms. The specific feature of epistolary phraseological occasionalisms is their correlation with the context of the letter, where they originate and perform some particular esthetic functions. Chekhov either creates his own phraseological occasionalisms following the patterns of language phraseology, or reinterprets metaphorically free collocations, which get idiomatic readings in his text. His individual author phraseologisms destroy the stereotypes of perception of the world, update the phraseological imagery and represent nominative signs in a new semantic-stylistic perspective. The mechanism of creating Chekhov’s author phraseologisms is discussed on the basis of his letters to different recipients.

Key words: письма А.П. Чехова, фразеологические окказионализмы, семантико-стилистический сдвиг, эмоциональная оценочность, A.P. Chekhov’s letters, phraseological occasionalisms, semantic-stylistic shift, emotional appraisal
