The article reveals the role and importance of media realities in E. Vodolazkin's novel “Aviator”. The media realities, being an essential element of the world picture created by E. Vodolazkin, are multifunctional: it marks time, characterizes the sociocultural reality, cоnveys the features of the social and political climate in the country, which determines the activity of the media and the hierarchy of their functions. The ironically painted image of the mass media of the late 1990s in the novel «Aviator» conveys the characteristic features and tendencies of the Russian media life of this period.
