It is the matter of the only finished novel by Ivan Kushchevsky in the article, as well as of the genre characteristics of this work which does not unambiguously fit into the "new people" novels group. The author of the article finds traits of family chronicle, social and psychological novel, and epic novel in Ivan Kushchevsky's novel, emphasizes features of the main character, notes the role which is carried out by it, observes the system of semantic attractions and repulsions which are organised in the work in a complicated way. According to the author of the work, thanks to creation of non-standard, ambiguous images, Ivan Kushchevsky managed to approach reality considerably in the novel. The epic essence of the literary work, which is small by volume, is reached by the writer due to skillful correlation of figures and due to definition of life priorities, at owing to giving a subtle portrayal of private destinies against the background of the era, the subtle linkage of the personal and the public. The writer depicts the figures of the people of miscellaneous ranks obsessed with new ideas, the character who is carried away by serfdom abolition idea and, which is of particular importance, shows reaction of the society to deeds of certain characters. Objectivity of the image and the author's assessment of the events are remarkable: Ivan Kushchevsky chooses the course which is the most relevant to epic novel: results of behaviour and actions of his characters are defined by the life itself.
