The article is aimed to analyze some features of professional politicians’ language on the basis of Ethiopian leaders’ speeches in Amharic. It puts an emphasis on the way the language of politics reflects ideological position of those who use it. The author also examines how political language is influenced by socio-political phenomena, that are characteristic of a society. Political language is a particular one used in the field of professional politics. Like other languages of occupation it operates within the framework of national language. That is why political language responds to all changes in national language. Making speeches a politician places words within the context which gives them ideological and political meaning. The analyzed material confirms the fact that ideological position of a political leader greatly influences the vocabulary he/she uses in the speeches as well as the way of his/her communication with the audience. Political speeches announce ideological stance of those who make them, but the main goals politicians want to achieve - to gain, keep and exercise power - are hidden from the recipients.
